What to buy for your kiosk

Got the go-ahead? The kiosk runs on iPad and Android tablets, so you can buy whatever fits your team. Here's what to look for. You need a tablet; a badge printer and a stand are optional.

1
What to look for in a tabletChoose a current model rather than older stock, so it keeps getting operating system updates for years. Aim for a screen of 11 inches or larger — 13 inches is the easiest for visitors to read and tap. 128 GB of storage is enough; 256 GB gives you more room. Wi-Fi is all the kiosk needs; cellular is optional.
2
On iPadThe kiosk needs iPadOS 17 or later, so any current iPad works. Our usual pick is the latest iPad Air in the 13-inch size: a large, bright screen without the price of an iPad Pro.
3
On AndroidThe kiosk needs Android 14 or later. Choose a tablet from a major brand that still receives security updates. Mid-range models or better keep check-in fast and smooth. Android is a good choice if your IT team already manages Android devices, or where iPads cost more.
4
Badge printer: Brother QL-820NWBIf you plan to print visitor badges, use the Brother QL-820NWB. It works with both iPad and Android kiosks, over Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. Load it with 62 mm continuous rolls: DK-2205 (black on white) or DK-2251 (black and red on white).
5
Stand: tabletop or wall mountPick a tabletop stand for a reception counter, or a wall mount for an entrance or lobby. Whichever you choose, make sure it fits the exact tablet model and size you buy.
6
Where to place the kioskPut it where visitors look first: just inside the entrance, before they reach the front desk. Keep the touch screen no higher than about 48 inches (122 cm) from the floor so it's comfortable for standing and seated visitors alike. Avoid direct sunlight and window glare, stay close to a power outlet and within strong Wi-Fi coverage. In a lobby that isn't always staffed, choose a stand that locks.
7
Set up the kioskOnce the hardware arrives, follow Set up your first kiosk to pair the tablet, then Lock your tablet into kiosk mode so it stays on CoReceptionist all day.
TIPIf anything comes up while you set up the kiosk, reply to your welcome email and we'll help.

Frequently asked questions

Does CoReceptionist provide the hardware?

We don't sell or lease hardware, so you'll buy your own tablet and, if you'd like badges, a printer. The good news is the requirements are modest: any tablet running iPadOS 17 or Android 14 or later will do. That keeps your costs down, lets you buy from the retailer you already use, and means you're never locked into our equipment.

Can we use a tablet we already have?

Yes. If it runs iPadOS 17 or later, or Android 14 or later, and still receives updates, it's ready to be your kiosk.

Will new tablet models work?

Yes. Any new iPad or Android tablet that meets the minimum operating system version works with the kiosk, so there's no need to wait for a particular model.

Do we need a tablet with cellular?

No. Wi-Fi is all the kiosk needs. A cellular model is only worth it if the entrance has no reliable Wi-Fi.

Do we need a badge printer?

No, it's optional. Without one, visitors still check in and hosts are still notified. If you'd like each visitor to have a unique visitor code, you can show it on screen with or without a printer — the two are separate settings. Add a Brother QL-820NWB whenever you want printed badges.

How many kiosks do we need?

One for each entrance where visitors arrive. Each kiosk is paired to a location, so check-ins are logged against the right building, floor or room.

Can visitors check in without touching the kiosk?

Yes. Visitors can scan the QR code on the kiosk's welcome screen and check in from their own phone.
